Modern and Jazz
Grade 1 to Advanced 2 Modern and non-syllabus Level 1 & Level 2 Jazz classes
The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance modern grades develop strength, flexibility and artistry through a series of carefully constructed exercises and dance movements. Various styles are covered throughout the grades including contemporary, lyrical, blues, jazz and 'funky isolations'. All work is technically based (not freestyle) and a strong understanding of classical technique is required. Therefore it is compulsory to study ballet to take Grade 2 modern plus, and compulsory to study body conditioning to take Grade 4 modern plus. Tap must be learnt alongside Primary and Grade 1 modern to assist rhythmical understanding.
Non-syllabus jazz lessons which are strongly recommended to be taken alongside modern classes are to introduce children to the wide range of styles associated with current 'commercial dance'. Jazz classes incorporate jazz, hip-hop, street jazz, commercial dance and musical theatre. Jazz classes give the children the opportunity to improve their flexibility, increase confidence in performing new styles, and improve the speed at which they are able to grasp and retain new sequences.
