Children's classes leading to class examinations
Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance Class Examinations are so called because the teacher enters the examination with a group of three to four children. The teacher, however, is not permitted to join in and lead the children in any way, so the children must have a complete knowledge of and ability to recall all of the exercises from memory. The teacher's presence creates a supportive environment, from which all future examinations can positively develop.
Pre-Primary 2 ballet
From approximately age 6 to 7 years, but depending on development and experience
Pre-Primary 2 ballet is a culmination of all the skills learnt in Pre-Primary 1 ballet, with extension of the legs and feet a particular focus. The 'settings' of the exercises are completed, memorised and then put in sequence. Children learn that the examination requires appropriate etiquette as well as the ability to sustain a pleasing sense of performance.
Primary modern
From 5 to 6 years
At approximately age 5, children can learn a new subject at Grafton Dance Academy - modern dance. Through the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance modern syllabus, children learn to dance with different 'qualities' to those associated with the ballet class. Flexibility and strength are improved and there is an emphasis on mastering understanding of right and left. Children make creative shapes with their own body as well as with partners and with the rest of the group.
Primary tap
From approximately age 6 to 7 years, but depending on development and experience
The new Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance Primary tap syllabus is lively and fun. The skills learnt in the Pre-Primary tap class are perfected and for the examination, put into sequences with music. Coordination, a strong eye focus and a pleasing sense of performance are developed, as well as clear and rhythmical beating.
